History
Madame Baudelaire sprinted through the muddied terrain, gasping for air as she evaded the relentless pursuit of bounty hunters and gleaners. She had committed the ultimate transgression: escaping the Forum with a tome stolen from the hidden archives. Clutching the tome tightly in her hands, along with the precious pages of her life's research, she pressed on, her breaths ragged. Every so often, she paused just long enough to invoke a spell—manipulating the light through the trees or casting illusions to buy herself a few precious moments. She had a decision to make: risk the treacherous journey northwest into Dravania or find a place to hide along the Straits of Yaemoor, though that meant venturing even farther west.Exhausted and frustrated, Baudelaire collapsed near a stream, recouping her energy while she ate berries and drank from the cool, clear water. It was here, as she gathered her strength, that something unusual caught her eye. A basket drifted toward her from further up the river. What she saw inside was nothing short of a miracle. Spirits and elementals hovered around the basket, acting as caretakers for the child within—stillborn, yet kept warm and seemingly alive against all odds.Baudelaire reached into the basket, lifting the baby gently. The child’s skin shimmered in the sunlight, absorbing its aether like a plant drawing life from the sun. And then, in that fleeting moment, the infant cried. It was as though the aether had brought her back to life. Baudelaire stood there, stunned. By some stroke of fate, she had discovered not just a child, but a key—a living link to the research she had dedicated her life to. Watching the spirits and elementals protect the girl, Baudelaire made her choice: she would hide here, among the woods near the Straits of Yaemoor, where the forest itself seemed to offer protection.Over time, she and the girl settled in an abandoned cottage hidden deep within the woods. Baudelaire cast enchantments, setting up a Boundary that wove a natural maze around their home, keeping prying eyes away. In this secluded place, she became the girl's mother, her teacher, and her only connection to the outside world. Only Baudelaire would leave the Boundary, returning with books, scrolls, and knowledge that she cherished above all else. Day after day, she imparted everything she knew, feeding the girl’s mind with the secrets of magic, aether, and the ancient knowledge of the land.As the years passed, other children found their way to them. It became an orphanage in secret, with Baudelaire assigning each child specific tasks that suited their talents, all part of her grand design—to devise the magic she had long sought. But that magic would never be realized, for Baudelaire succumbed to the Canker, leaving behind her life's work and a teenage Briar to take on the mantle of leadership.Briar, now the head of the orphanage, became the teacher to the remaining children, never daring to step beyond the Boundary. They lived in peace, untouched by the world outside—until one fateful night. A pirate’s manacutter crashed near the orphanage, and with it, the winds of change arrived...
